Why Do We Call it Sugar Sand?

Sand is sand, right?  That’s what I always thought.  I grew up here in Alabama, on the coast of the Gulf of Mexico.  Seeing the white sand that lines the shore was an everyday thing, or at least an every day that I wanted to go down there thing.  I thought all beaches and all sand were pretty much the same, but over the years, I’ve learned that our sand is special.  It’s white, and when I say white, I mean the sunlight bouncing off the beach will nearly blind you.  And it’s soft – there aren’t any rocks or things that can injure bare feet, which is really what you want when it comes to sand.  It’s like, well, sugar.

Gulf Shores, Al. sugar sand

See what I mean?  Pretty similar, right?  The only difference, really, is the taste.  So, if you’ve never taken off your shoes and walked around in sugar, come to Alabama’s Gulf Coast.  We have miles and miles of it, just waiting for you.  And just so you’ll know, the sugar is on the left.
